An Oldie But Goodie From Ike

July 28, 2014

“A people that values its privileges above its principles soon loses both.”
– Dwight D. Eisenhower

This quote comes from the same President who warned us about the military-industrial complex–in his farewell address, probably because any sooner and he would share a fate similar to his successor in the Oval Office. Consider this quote with regard to the compulsion most people have nowadays for the newest “phone” (which does considerably more than a telephone needs to do) and the convenience of pawning off responsibilities by letting, or insisting, others take them on: schools are expected to be parents for too many and we have nearly bi-yearly school shootings at all grade levels. We refuse to take on the mantle of protecting our own freedoms and, upon adopting that mindset, we decry the federal government infringing basic constitutional rights.

These are not accidental coincidences. These are the natural consequences of our choices as a people. It isn’t like we can’t anticipate these things if we stop and consider what we do in advance.
